city councilmember -- city council person ma dell shirk. she passed away recently at the ripe old age of 100 years old. ma dell was truly the court godmother to be quoting [speaker not understood] godmother of east bay politics. the former city of berkeley vice mayor and [speaker not understood] was born and raised in jefferson arkansas as the granddaughter of slaves, she was passionate about justice and civil rights. during her tenure as the berkeley elected official she was instrumental in creating multiple city commissions including the berkeley commission on labor. when she retired she was 92 years old. she was the oldest elected official in california at that time. in 2007 berkeley city council renamed city hall in her honor. ma dell was commit today educating seniors and the entire community on the benefits of healthy living. she loved shopping for fruits and vegetables and you can often find her cooking nutritious meals at the west berkeley senior center. she leaves behind a tremendous legacy of over 70 years of public service and she's inspired countless others to do the same,

benefit or his own personal financial gain? >> del has reached a deal to sell itself to michael dell, founder and ceo. carl icahn thinks he wildly undervalues the share. he bought stock in dell and said this deal isn't worth it, let me make my own offer to buy the company, or let's pay shareholders. >> we're also missing the big point. carl loves this kind of a thing where there is a crazy quilt scenario going on, a perfect storm for him. said we want to make this an even playing field. play by our rules. the last thing carl never once is an even playing field. melissa: nobody does. >> he told me once i don't believe in the word "fair." why should anything be fair? that is for idiots. melissa: address this specifically. does he really believe dell is undervalued, or does he know by virtue putting his own money at risk and getting involved he can jam up the value and make money? maybe he came in and blocked blackstone, make an offer at $4.50 for a buyout. in that case he caught bondholders at least money. >> he has a mixed track record, everybody has a mixed track record. in this case

is trading discount to dell and other companies. when i look at valuation, economics to the business, the price implies something like 60 or 70% return on invested capital. they're at 130 right now. i think 60 or 70% is pretty good return on capital for a company in the consumer electronics business. so i think, look, unless apple is able to come up with the next great big thing no way they maintain the pricing power with high margins and premium pricing power they enjoy. liz: that's the thing, larry, if you're looking at numbers and earnings, all kinds of reports, the reality is this market continues to defy gravity even with all kinds of bad news. what do you think derails it if anything? >> it will come down to growth. people are excited about sovereign yields are so lo. problems in europe have not gone away. thank goodness for e movement p. that helped a lot. -- omp. nobody knows how to unwind that balance sheet, nobody knows how to manage that. something has to give. we're running 2% gdp. that is not growth. we're moving along, stumbling along, of those three will derail this ma
